MOROCCO pt. 1

The past week & a half have been a blur of traveling throughout spain & morocco. & its been amazing! But we’re back now & I have a ton of laundry to wash, an apartment to clean but you know, I’m blogging instead!
My mom came to spain on the 28 & we were off to fez, morocco, on the 29. Morocco was all I could have dreamed & more, really. We got to fez in the afternoon & went out to the medina immediately after checking in at our hotel. Fez’s medina is a crazy place. If I have one recommendation for someone that’s planning to go to fez, it’s to get a guide. The medina is a market made up of thousands of shops, many which look the same & many that you would never even know where there, hundreds of mosques, schools & people also live in the medina & it’s connected with teeny, tiny, windy paths that make up the streets of the medina. There is no rhyme or reason to the way the medina is built & there are hardly any street markers to help you find your way around on your own. We saw multiple tourists with their maps our trying to ask for directions & find their way & I’m fairly certain it would be impossible. Definitely get a guide.

With that being said, the medina is unlike anywhere I have ever been! I expected it to be more or less similar to the grand bazaar in instanbul, turkey, but it’s a totally different experience. We spent our time (with our guide, of course!) wandering the medina, looking & admiring at all of the handmade goods, going rug shopping & having hundreds of rugs laid out before us while we ooh-ed & ahh-ed & eventually found the one that was perfect for our future home, wherever it may be! All the while drinking the delicious mint tea that they offer everywhere & cedar running wild around all of the rugs & the men showing them to us were loving it, they repeatedly told us to “make it your home” whenever I tried to get cedar off of the rugs, telling us that that is in fact what the rug is made for, haha. along with the rug shop we were able to go to a leather factory, where they get, cut & dye the leather before using it to make all sorts of bags, jackets, shoes & decorations. it was so cool to see the entire process, especially the dying pools.

We went & saw some of the most amazing mosques that had insanely beautiful tile & carving work throughout. I was constantly in awe as we went around fez at all of the beauty that was around me, not to mention their culture. It’s always amazing to me when traveling in a country that is mainly muslim, where they have prayer calls sounding throughout the day & you see the people going to prayer & praying wherever they can. I remember being so amazed at this when we went to turkey when I graduated high school, & I was still amazed this time around. Moroccan people are among some of the nicest I have ever met while traveling. They are such a calm & friendly people, constantly hugging & kissing cedar & helping in any way, along with giving. Practically every time we bought something they gave us something for free, specifically for cedar. He came home with more loot than anyone in our group!
